Haute Bricolage
Tom Sachs at the Tomio Koyama--tom sachs home page--Tom constructs models of pop, fashion, and design icons — from Reitzvelt chairs to the McDonald's arches. He employs foam core, Sharpie markers, duct tape and hot glue. His objects are intentionally rough-shod, as if he were spontaneously working out his obsessions, of which there are quite a few--Tom Sachs will show his “Haute Bricolage” at Mary Boone Gallery through October 23. Sachs is best known for his distinctive objects made from cut and glued status shopping bags and boxes in the form of a toilet, a handaxe or a rat; they straightforwardly link consumerism with urban anxiety. --

"American Bricolage": Photos

Yvonne Kendall--Her work explores encasement and wrapping of familiar objects such as toys and dolls. The more soiled and impregnated the wrapping, the better. Kendall also casts rubber moulds of soft toys skun to reveal the deformed and ugly foam rubber inside. Kendall's scultpures simultaneously repel and attract--petrified bears
Large #1 Meal to Go--Tom Fruin is a garbage collector whose recycling program serves less as a means toward cleaning up his environment than a memorial to those who inadvertently contribute their refuse to it. Fruin's deal? He creates flags and murals from discarded drug bags that he finds in parks and other locations around New York City

arte povera
Arte Povera - Italian for "poor art," it was mostly sculptural work made from everyday materials including soil, cement, twigs, newspapers, instead of traditional materials like stone and bronze. This largely Italian movement, named by the critic Germano Celant in 1967, endured through the 1970s, concerned with metaphorical treatments to do with nature, culture, history, and contemporary life. Artists associated with Arte Povera include Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, and Michelangelo Pistoletto. Here's a link to a photo of a Mario Merz piece, Giap Igloo.
The term 'Arte Povera' was introduced by the Italian art critic and curator, Germano Celant, in 1967. His pioneering texts and a series of key exhibitions provided a collective identity for a number of young Italian artists based in Turin, Milan, Genoa and Rome. They were working in radically new ways, breaking with the past and entering a challenging dialogue with trends in Europe and America

She has been traveling extensively since the age of 15, living in the US, Europe and Mexico. She uses these experiences to create works that deal with the communication and miscommunication of women, and the confusion, sorrow, longing, pain, and celebration which results. These works deal with the subjects of abuse and early maturation, PTSD, mental illness, obsessive experiences and relationships. Working mainly with media such as photo, Xerox, cardboard, thread, tape, wax paper, Kleenex, lunch bags, alphabet soup letters, gum wrappers, and other everyday objects from life and from childhood she sends cryptic messages of layered images and text.

tramp art

Tramp
Art
is also a wanderer's art form: so again, there are no written
records of the carvers' work. The stories of this art form became the
facts; the misconceptions became the truths. There were no rules for
constructing the pieces; materials were whatever the carver had available;
decorations were whatever he could produce or find. Within the context
of his own imagination, experience, and abilities, the carver assimilated
what he saw with what he had to work with. He then translated and created
what he saw into works of art by using his pocketknife and the ever-present
cigar box. Like the hobo, the tramp was a wanderer, but unlike the hobo,
he was not a worker. Most tramps lived by their wits, some by petty
thievery and begging, somE by robbery and murder. The hobo feared the
tramp and was contemptuous of him as a loafer, while the tramp despised
the hobo as a sucker for working.

Pique Assiette

An entire wall made of broken plates! --we laid the broken plates and tile in a door from the 1920s and put legs on to make a table--broken tile art--broken plate

more broken plates...Pique Assiette ...Shard art, a folk art which draws on traditional mosaic techniques, became popular during the Victorian Era when people began turning their broken heirloom china into beautiful and treasured decorative pieces for their homes. Early pieces were often called putty pots because the bits of china were embedded in putty on bases of various materials. They were also called memoryware, because the shards used often carried great sentimental value and family memories.

marcottage
Marcotte: A part of a plant capable of regenerating missing parts, thus propagating a new plant capable of independent growth.
However the term marcottage has also been used in art to indicate the take of old parts and recycling them into something new. A technique used by Michaelangelo (see his Pietà Rondanini) and Rodin.
marcottage is a kind of "re-rooting"
TAKING SOMETHING OLD AND TURNING IT INTO SOMETHING NEW

Marcottage reprend un terme de la botanique pour l'appliquer au domaine artisiquei:l'operation consiste a composer un object nourveau en utilisant desmateriaux our des objects recuperes

Rodin and marcottage:
À partir d'éléments dissociés de l'ensemble, et réutilisés selon les principes du marcottage, Rodin peut faire figurer des éléments semblables, mais différemment agencés, en plusieurs endroits de sa composition; il peut aussi en faire une œuvre indépendante.
more Rodin-- more Rodin-- more Rodin-- more Rodin-- more Rodin-- more Rodin--

self-quoted:
Birthday. Birthdays are made to celebrate. To make you remember that your were born. That you're alive. For her birthday, he'd given her Rodin. Marcottage, the use of finished parts for new arrangements, disassembling one to create another. Hybriding. Like Rodin. He'd taken parts of one life and tried coupling them with parts of another. That day they put together His and Hers to make Theirs.

Basquiat and Michelangelo had things in common:
both used the symbolic ladder in their paintings
both had art “imprisoned” in material that just couldn’t wait to come out
both recycled the self via a form of marcottage (Michelangelo's Pieta Rondanini made with leftover sculpture and Basquiat’s canvasses made with shopping lists)
both rivaled with Leonardo (Michelangelo who tried to ignore him and Basquiat who just couldn't help feeling the need to paint Mona, too)

withdrawing room, is a site-specific performance-based installation situated somewhere in-between what is familiar yet unknowable, blurring the possibility of an absolute inside or out, sameness or difference, and public or private. Using wallpaper and textile of a co-ordinating pattern, a corridor within City Hall will be transformed from a transient place into a staged domestic setting.

EHIBITION. Reading Lisa Deanne Smith's declaration, I AM EXTREMELY RATIONAL..... Each of the twenty letters were sewn by the artist into her own skin using her hair as thread. They were then individually photographed in close-up detail --serum and tiny traces of blood well out of the points where the skin was pierced.
David Grenier's three grey flannel panels each bear two short poems rendered in straight pins. The texts describe conventionally 'queer' characters and each incorporates, in the manner of an acrostic, a label for a homosexual man.

Boys with Needles: David Grenier, Neil MacInnis, Thomas Roach and Patrick Traer
Textile Museum of Canada, Tortonto, CA Canada
On tour from Museum London, Boys with Needles presents the work of four artists - David Grenier, Neil MacInnis, Thomas Roach and Patrick Traer - who use fibre and needles to express their sexual philosophies and inspire dialogue about the role of queer culture in religion, technology, media and the arts. Provocative, fanciful and sometimes humorous, these four artists challenge social stereotypes and the archetypal association of homosexuality and textile arts within western culture.
Boys with Needles
Most recently, two Toronto artists by the names of David Grenier and Johannes Zits successfully explored the domain of sexual politics without being reductive in their efforts. Grenier’s wall-to-wall work, which featured needlepoint drawings of men on leafy wallpaper, projected the idea of forbidden desire and the clandestine vehicle of cruising through which desire might be expressed.

Carole LeRoy’s book, Pain-Free Quilting takes a simultaneously serious and light-hearted approach to helping aching quilters solve the problems that we often experience. Subtitled “The Self-Help Book for Women Who Sew Too Much,” Pain-Free Quilting addresses the issues from both a medical and sewing perspective. Trained as an occupational health nurse, Carole provides physically sound yet immensely practical suggestions for preventing and/or treating those nagging pains that most of us eventually develop. She then proceeds to address most of the known complaints that quilters experience, from back pain to eyestrain to carpal tunnel syndrome.
